When data recovery is possible
As long as the storage chip is intact, there's often something that can be done.
Device no longer starts
Black screen, no response, no charging indicator. Often the fault isn't in the storage but in the power supply or on the circuit board: a faulty charging chip, a broken trace, a short-circuited component.

We test the device under the microscope and check whether the storage can still be accessed. Often it's enough to restore power to the point where the device starts long enough to read out the data.
Display broken, device still works
The device is working, you just can't see anything any more or the touchscreen doesn't respond. Here the effort is usually low because the electronics are intact.

It's important that you know your device passcode, otherwise the data can't be unlocked. The question often arises whether you just want to take your data or have the display replaced at the same time — for that there's our phone repair.
Water damage
Toilet, sink, rain shower, pool or lake. What matters is what happens next: corrosion keeps working even if the device still runs at first.

Switch it off, don't charge it and bring it to us. Salt water, soapy water and drinks attack the circuit board much faster than clear tap water — the sooner we open and clean it, the better the chances.
Hard drive or SSD faulty
If the laptop no longer starts or the SSD is no longer recognised, we check whether the drive can still be read — removed or in the device. On many newer MacBooks the SSD is soldered directly onto the logic board — in that case the recovery is done via the board itself, much like with a smartphone.

Phone after a drop
A hard impact can crack solder joints or warp the circuit board without it being visible from the outside. The device stays dark, keeps restarting or gets stuck on the logo.

We examine the board under the microscope and check whether the connections to the storage can be restored. If the storage chip itself is undamaged, there's often a chance. Until then, keep the device switched off if possible.
What isn't possible
Not every recovery is feasible. If data on a current smartphone has been deleted or the device has been reset, it can no longer be read because of encryption.

Overwritten data can't be recovered. If the storage chip is broken or burnt, there's nothing left to read. And without the device passcode, encrypted data stays locked. In that case you pay nothing.
Data recovery under the microscope
A smartphone's data is stored on a memory chip that is soldered firmly onto the main board. Housing, display and battery can be replaced, but the storage can't.
That's why we work directly on the board: we measure supply voltages, look for broken traces and corroded contacts, and re-seat individual components with a hot-air station and micro soldering iron. Handwork on components just a few tenths of a millimetre in size, in our own workshop.

Our shop is right in the centre of Aachen, between the Bushof bus station and the Elisenbrunnen. There are several multi-storey car parks in the city centre, and the Bushof is just round the corner — from there, buses run to the entire StädteRegion. We're open Mon–Fri from 10 am to 7 pm and Sat from 11 am to 7 pm. You don't need an appointment.

Frequently asked questions about data recovery
How much does data recovery cost?
We tell you the price after the analysis, because the effort and chances depend on the damage. The analysis is free – unlike with repairs, there's no inspection fee. If the recovery doesn't succeed, you pay nothing. If you need a USB stick, 20 € is added for it.
What happens if it doesn't work?
Then you pay nothing — no inspection fee and no handling charge. You get your device back, and we tell you why it didn't work: whether the storage itself is damaged, the data is encrypted or the connection to the storage couldn't be restored.
How long does data recovery take?
Honestly, that can't be said in advance. Some cases take little effort, while in others a component has to be ordered or the board is badly corroded. You'll know more after the analysis. We won't make you a promise we can't keep.
Is my data safe with you?
Your device stays in our own workshop for the recovery. We hand the data over to you on your device or on a USB stick we get for you. You decide how the handover should work when you give your approval — nothing is done without your consent.
Can deleted photos be recovered?
On current smartphones, usually not. iPhones and newer Android devices encrypt their storage; data that has been deleted or removed by a reset can no longer be read afterwards. First check the “Recently Deleted” folder and your backup in iCloud or Google. Data recovery helps when the data is still there but the device no longer gives it up.
How does sending in work?
You register your device via our send-in page, pack it with plenty of padding and send it to us. After the analysis we get back to you with our findings and the price; work only starts once you've given your approval. We'll agree with you how you get your data back.
