Apple unveiled the iPhone Duo on September 9, 2026 – the first foldable iPhone. When unfolded, the internal display measures 7.6 inches, while a 5.4-inch display remains usable on the outside when folded. The chassis is made of Grade 5 titanium, with a hinge consisting of over 100 individual parts.
First things first: Pre-order starting Friday, October 16. Available in stores from Friday, October 23. Please check the current price of your desired configuration with the provider before purchasing. There are two colors: Starlight and Midnight.
What makes the iPhone Duo stand out
-
Two displays: 7.6" inside, 5.4" outside, both Super Retina XDR with ProMotion, Always-On, and 3,000 nits peak brightness
-
Same aspect ratio: Content scales proportionally, whether folded or unfolded
-
Nanotexture: matte coating on the inner display, reduces reflections and makes the crease less visible
-
Touch ID instead of Face ID: the fingerprint sensor is located in the side button
-
Under-display FaceTime camera: it remains invisible as long as it is not needed
-
A20 Pro: the same chip as in the iPhone 18 Pro, with its own vapor chamber
-
eSIM only: worldwide, no slot for a physical SIM card
-
Split View: two apps side-by-side on an iPhone for the first time

The offer depends on the storage size and accessories. You can find current manufacturer information on the Apple iPhone Duo page. Please verify the total price of your desired configuration; this does not constitute a stock or financing commitment by STARPHONE.
The hinge – the most interesting part
With a foldable smartphone, the mechanics are everything. Apple uses a hinge made of over 100 individual parts that stabilizes the center of the display and ensures the device remains flat when opened. Magnets also engage when closing.
The hinge cover is 3D-printed from titanium with a micro-blasted finish. Inside, support ribs reinforce the structure, and antenna lines are backed with ceramic fibers.
The foldable display itself has a multi-layer construction: high-strength glass above and below the folding layer, a nanotexture top layer made of a polymer with up to 40 percent higher rigidity than industry-standard materials, and adhesives that allow the layers to slide past each other when folding – like the pages of a book. Beneath this lies a titanium plate.
Ceramic Shield 2 protects the front with three times better scratch resistance than the previous generation, and Ceramic Shield protects the back. The device is IP68 classified, tested at 6 meters for up to 30 minutes.
Camera: what makes folding possible
The 48MP Fusion main camera records with zero shutter lag and offers a 2x telephoto zoom in optical quality. The 48MP ultra-wide camera is the same as in the iPhone 18 Pro models. Video is available in 4K Dolby Vision at up to 120 frames per second.
More exciting are the features that exist only because of the two displays:
-
Duo Preview: the person being photographed sees themselves live on the outer display and can check their pose and framing
-
Selfies with the main camera: higher resolution than with the front camera, with a preview on the outside
-
Smart Photo: AI models on the A20 Pro analyze the scene and trigger automatically when everyone is in position
-
Duo FaceTime: people nearby can join a video call via the outer display
-
Attention Getter: animations on the outer display to direct children's attention to the camera
Battery and performance
There is a separate battery on each side of the device. Apple claims up to 31 hours of video playback on the internal display, up to 44 hours on the external one, and up to 24 hours of use per charge when both displays are used equally.
Charging via cable reaches 50 percent in about 20 minutes; wirelessly via MagSafe or Qi2, it takes about 30 minutes.
Regarding the chip, Apple cites up to 35 percent better sustained performance than the iPhone 17 Pro. This is made possible by a chip housing modeled after the M-series, which connects the A20 Pro directly to the vapor chamber.
eSIM only – what you should know
The iPhone Duo can be used worldwide exclusively with eSIM. There is no slot for a physical SIM card. Apple gains space for the batteries this way.
For most, this is not a problem – 1&1, Telekom, O2, and Vodafone support eSIM. However, those who still use an old card or frequently switch between devices should clarify the migration process with their provider before purchasing.
Also new is iPhone Handoff: this allows the same phone number to be switched between two iPhones. In Germany, the feature is launching with Telekom.
If you have any questions about this: we are 1&1 Premium Partners and will set it up for you in the store.
One point that Apple downplays
The new Siri with Apple Intelligence is initially not available on the iPhone in the EU. This is in the fine print of the press release, not the headline. Those buying for this feature should be aware of this.
The other iOS 27 features are coming: Split View, a revised Standby mode, new watch faces, and retrospective adjustment of image composition in the Photos app. Apple Pencil with USB-C will be supported later in the year.
What we can say from a repair shop perspective – and what we cannot
A reliable judgment on the daily repair routine cannot yet be derived from a product presentation. Whether STARPHONE can offer a specific Duo repair must be clarified based on the model, damage, and available spare parts before placing an order.
What can be deduced from the design: A hinge with over a hundred parts and a multi-layer foldable display are mechanically stressed components. How frequently certain types of damage occur with this model cannot be predicted from the design alone.
Three things that help from the start with a foldable smartphone:
-
Do not let anything get stuck: sand grains or crumbs between the display halves cause real damage when folding shut
-
A suitable case from the start: the edges and the hinge side are particularly exposed
-
Do not force open or overextend: the hinge has a defined range of motion
A high purchase price alone does not determine the economic viability of a repair or the benefit of device insurance. Have the repair feasibility clarified for your specific case; a flat-rate cost coverage is not promised here.
Who is this for?
The iPhone Duo is not a device you buy because your old one is getting slow. It is a form factor, and whether it suits you depends on a single question: do you regularly want to have a 7.6-inch display with you without lugging around a tablet?
If yes – streaming on the go, two apps side-by-side, reading documents – then this is the first iPhone form factor that can do it. If not, compare a classic iPhone and continued use of your existing device based on your actual requirements.
Repair your existing iPhone instead of upgrading?
If only one component is defective on your existing iPhone, you can find the offered models in the iPhone repair selection. For short battery life, there is information on battery replacement; for glass breakage, see display repair. These offers are not a promise for the iPhone Duo.
