Schul-iPad kaputt – was jetzt?

A fall from a backpack, a crack across the screen, a battery that no longer lasts until the end of the day: school iPads lead a tough life. If your school iPad is broken, switch it off and do not continue to use it if the glass is shattered. Then, check whether you are allowed to have it repaired privately – you can see the price for your model immediately in the repair configurator.

The first few minutes: What you should do immediately

  • Switch off the device. If the glass is shattered, fine splinters can come loose, and any pressure on the display can worsen the damage.
  • Do not touch damaged glass. Do not press on the cracked area and clarify how to handle it safely before transporting it.
  • Got wet? Do not charge. Electricity and residual moisture are the most dangerous combination.
  • Check for an existing backup. Use another device for this. Do not continue to use a wet or screen-damaged iPad to create a new backup.

Am I allowed to have the school iPad repaired privately?

Not every school iPad belongs to the family. Some belong to the school or the school authority, others were purchased privately and are only managed by the school.

Whether you are allowed to have the device repaired privately is regulated by your school's user agreement. In case of doubt, ask them before placing an order.

How much does the repair cost?

What your iPad repair costs at STARPHONE is shown in the repair configurator – including VAT. The exact price depends on the model and the damage: A screen replacement on a newer iPad costs more than a battery replacement on an older model.

You can see the price for your device in the configurator – free of charge and without registration. You can find the model name under "Settings" › "General" › "About" or printed in small text on the back.

Who pays – and do I need a cost estimate?

Who pays for the repair depends on who owns the iPad and what has been agreed upon with the school. If an insurance company is to cover the damage, ask them first what documentation they require.

  • The invoice is often sufficient. If the insurance company has already approved the repair, you will automatically receive an invoice after the repair to submit.
  • Written cost estimate: subject to a fee, paid in advance. This amount will be deducted from the total amount after the repair.

Whether and how much the insurance pays is determined solely by the insurance company. We will provide you with the necessary documents.

Before sending it in: Please do not send devices with a swollen or damaged battery as a standard package. Check the acceptance requirements with us first and follow the shipping instructions.

How the repair process works with us

  1. Check the price. Select the model and damage in the configurator.
  2. Send it in or bring it by. Nationwide with a shipping label – or come by Blondelstraße 10 in Aachen without an appointment.
  3. Test and repair. We test the iPad before and after the repair. If we find further damage, we will ask you first.
  4. Back to you. Collect it in-store or have it sent back insured. Often ready the same day – depending on the model and parts availability. Counted from arrival at the workshop; shipping time both ways comes on top.

What happens to the data and the school profile?

We do not remove or bypass the school profile. Even with a hardware repair, technical data loss cannot be completely ruled out. Coordinate data backup and the handling of the school profile with the responsible IT department in advance.

We only use the device passcode to test the iPad before and after the repair. If there is a software issue, we will clarify this with you beforehand. We still recommend a backup.

And what if the iPad won't turn on at all?

It is still worth having it checked. Which components can be repaired depends on the iPad model, the damage, and the available spare parts. If nothing works at all, we will take a look at the device first and tell you honestly what is possible.

Conclusion

A broken school iPad is not the end of the world. What is important: switch off the device, do not charge it if wet, clarify with the school whether you are allowed to have it repaired privately – and then check the price. You should check the conditions of the repair warranty and possible exceptions in advance.
